We host 1-2 workshops per year, encouraging guests and choir members alike to learn about and enjoy music of different styles and eras.
Our next workshop "HANDELing stolen goods" will take place on Saturday 21st January 2023 10am-4pm approx.
A choral singing workshop with BCS and their new director Rory McCleery for a day exploring borrowing in the music of Georg Friedrich Handel. Learn the secret (and not so secret!) and surprising origins of some of Handel's best-loved choruses as you sing movements from his Oratorios, including Messiah and Israel in Egypt, and see how this composer, who “takes other men’s pebbles and polishes them into diamonds” turned the act of musical borrowing into an artform.
Facilitator: Rory McCleery
Rory McCleery is an award-winning Scottish conductor, countertenor and musicologist whose work takes him across the world: he has directed choirs and led masterclasses and workshops in the USA, Spain, Germany and Italy, and features regularly on radio and television, including the recent BBC2 series 'Art That Made Us'. Rory is Artistic Director of The Marian Consort, with whom he performs internationally, including an upcoming televised tour of Japan. When not researching and conducting, Rory is also active as a countertenor, performing as a soloist in the music of Handel, Bach and Purcell with such ensembles as The Dunedin Consort and The English Consort.
